Why does the white iPhone 4 have something above the speaker but not the black iPhone 4?

I’ve looked at videos and photos of both colors and for some odd reason the white iPhone 4 has what looks like a speaker above the speaker? What is it and why does the black iPhone 4 not have it? See Image: http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/tt206/iPatxx/gallery03-20100607-1.jpg

It’s just a sensor that detects when you put it to your ear for when you’re in a call. It shuts the screen off. The black on has it too, it is just not visible in the picture.
