If I buy a new cell phone without a plan and simply put my Cingular SIM card into it, will the new phone work?

I’d like to buy a new cell phone, but Cingular won’t let me for several more months. If I were to buy just any new phone and put my SIM card into it, would the phone work with my plan and with Cingular?

if you buy a phone from ebay or such, make sure it is either locked to cingular service or buy it unlocked, then your sim card will work with it. easiest way is to buy one already set for cingular service then you know for sure there will be no issues with swapping sim cards.
